Puerto Rican artist Javier Cintron (born: Puerto Rico 1967), who for years divided his time between Puerto Rico and New York City, frequently combines printing, collage and watercolor techniques to create eye-catching art works reflecting his cultural ties to his Puerto Rican homeland as well as his island and mainland experiences as an individual struggling to define himself while traveling between the two and living in both. He sees the airplane, which frequently recurs in his work, as an icon representing his Nuyorican identity pulling him between two places. Another frequently recurring metaphor is the Goya brand food label, a symbol of his Puerto Rican/Latino roots.
Cintron studied fine arts in the Dominican Republic, restoration of works on paper and mural techniques at La Escuela de Churrubusco in Mexico City, and printmaking at Escuela de Artes Plasticas, San Juan, Puerto Rico, and at the Parsons School of Design.
